Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Mark Moffett Jr. lived most of his life in New York City. He was valedictorian of the 1983 Anglo-American International High School graduating class; received a B.A. in English & American Literature from New York University in 1991 and an M.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Pittsburgh in 2002.Mark played classical piano since the age of seven and was accepted to the New England Conservatory of Music. For a period of time, he owned and operated Mammaw’s Mississippi Mud Brownie Company, a very successful gourmet treat business. He also had a tremendous passion for tennis, bridge, cooking and fine dining. Mark passed away from brain cancer caused by HIV at age 40.
The $1,500 annual scholarship named in his honor is awarded annually to a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender music major. The scholarship’s intent is to reinforce pride in sexual minorities as both individuals and musicians. Based on both artistic ability as well as social service, the scholarship is awarded with first preference to a piano major, second to a violin major and third to all other music majors.
